MayorsManor Podcast with NHL legend Mike Modano

In 2009 Mike Modano made his first appearance on MayorsManor. It was an in-depth look back his career, from being drafted in the first round by Minnesota to winning a Stanley Cup in Dallas, from his international success with Team USA to being dropped on his head by some EMTs and he even reflected on breaking a few records set by U.S. born players.

Since then, he's been back several times - where we discussed his signing with the Red Wings, playing the Kings one final time in LA and, for his last visit, he joined us on the MayorsManor Stanley Cup Final preview show to remind everybody he had been on the Kings bandwagon all season long.

Modano now returns for today's show, where we'll do our best to not talk about the lockout. Instead, we'll hit on some of these topics and see where things take us...

- His recent induction into the USA Hockey Hall of Fame - Being part of an ownership group that bought a pro hockey team - Never getting a chance to play in the Winter Classic - Goalies Eddie Belfour and Marty Turco - Next week's 2013 World Junior Championship in Russia - What's motivating him during retirement - Thoughts on the Stars signing Jaromir Jagr and Ray Whitney after being told he was too old - A few Darryl Sydor stories - Tennis, Golf and much more It's another conversation with a hockey legend, enjoy... http://blogtalk.vo.llnwd.net/o23/show/4/085/show_4085227.mp3 Thanks for listening!

MayorsManor Podcast with NHL goalie Marty Turco

After 543 games played in the National Hockey League, goaltender Marty Turco may have manned his last crease...or he might not have. Much like the NHL lockout, Turco's future remains to be determined.

At the moment, he's an unrestricted free agent and can sign with any team interested once play resumes. But, does he want to come back? He believes he has plenty left in the tank - enough to be a starting goalie for several more years actually. Yet, is he willing to put his mind, body and family through the grind again?

On today's MayorsManor show we'll talk about what the future may hold, plus look back at his career with the Dallas Stars, Chicago Blackhawks and brief stop with the Boston Bruins. We'll also get into his younger years, when he went undrafted in the OHL, won two NCAA Championships at Michigan and spent time with the 'black aces' during the Stanley Cup Final in 1999.

His 1.72 goals-against average in 2002-03 set the modern NHL record and he went on to re-write the Stars' goaltending marks for games played, wins, shutouts and a handful of other categories. On top of all that, few goalies over the last decade have had as much success against the LA Kings as Turco did - yet, in an interesting statistic, he has fewer wins against the Kings than vs. any other Pacific Division opponent.

We'll dig deeper on all those topics and hit these other areas as well today...

- Goalie equipment, including the bright yellow pads pictured above - What happens to a goalie's eyes during the lockout - Kings' goalies Jonathan Bernier and Jonathan Quick - What it was really like replacing Ed Belfour in Dallas - Mike Modano being removed as captain of the Stars - Having a relationship with the 'other' goalie - The best goalies he's ever faced - Key highs and lows from his career - Playing college hockey at Michigan - Twitter/Facebook questions from fans and much more It's a conversation with one of the best goalies of the past decade, enjoy... http://blogtalk.vo.llnwd.net/o23/show/4/085/show_4085225.mp3 Thanks for listening!

MayorsManor Podcast with LA Kings Alec Martinez

Among the many sub-stories to the NHL lockout is the number of players who've signed deals to play in Europe. And specific to the LA Kings, the player the organization is most likely concerned about is defenseman Alec Martinez.

Back on November 13th he was struck in the face with a slapshot while playing for TPS Turku in Finland. MayorsManor had previously posted pictures and video of the situation. However, Martinez is only now available to talk about things after being on the mend for the past few weeks following surgery that required metal plates to be inserted into his face.

On Wednesday's show, Kings defenseman Matt Greene told us how he's been getting updates on his teammate via Momma Martinez. Today, Alec joins us to talk about everything that went down overseas. Here's just a partial list of some of the things we'll get into...

- Did he have a concussion?

- When will he back on the ice?

- Having surgery in the U.S. vs. Finland

- Staying in touch with teammates during the lockout

- How the Kings found out about the injury - Very specific details about what he's gone through - How Ian Laperriere factored into the overall story Here's the first in-depth interview Martinez has done since being injured in Finland ... MayorsManor Podcast with Metal Blade CEO Brian Slagel

Heavy Metal and hockey, they go together like - well, everything and hockey!
Brian Slagel's Metal Blade Records is currently celebrating 30 years or serving the music scene and during those same three decades the other constant in his life has been a passion for hockey. While it doesn't grab the headlines the same way helping launch Metallica does, he owns over 2,000 jerseys and had season tickets at the Forum back in the early '80s. So, like many of the bands on his label, Slagel has paid his dues through some pretty lean years.
Not only did he get to enjoy the high-powered offense of players like Wayne Gretzky, Luc Robitaille and Bernie Nicholls, he also remembers Roman Vopat, Jeff Shevalier and Pavel Rosa.
Today on the MayorsManor show we'll chat (and possibly argue) plenty with Slagel about hockey and music, including some of these topics...
- The early years of Metal Blade, including his relationship with Metallica - Ratt, Cinderella, Poison, KISS, Guns N Roses and other bands - His favorite memories from the Forum - Owning a hockey team and eventually becoming partners with the league - Hockey fights - Favorite and least favorite hockey arenas in North America - His insane collection of game used jerseys - Which NHL teams have the best and worst logos? - Mighty Ducks 2 vs Slap Shot - Questions from fans ans so much more This is gonna be good... http://blogtalk.vo.llnwd.net/o23/show/4/085/show_4085229.mp3
